Why Speakers Must Heed the Rise of Mobile – Podcast 59
There’s no escaping it! The rise and rise of mobile usage is fundamentally changing where and how most everyone gathers and shares information these days. And it matters to everyone who needs to share messages with others in business (as leaders, influencers, marketers, and more).
Check this out.
- As of this year, more online searches will be conducted via mobile devices than desktops and mobile now wins when it comes to consuming content too.
- Smartphone data usage is set to grow 10 fold from 2014 to 2019[1]
- A modern smartphone (perhaps you’re using one to read this post) has more power than the computers used to land the Apollo 11 on the moon![2]
- There’s a good chance you regularly experience a bout of ‘nomobhopia’ (the fear of being somewhere without your mobile phone or any coverage)![3]
- My teenage daughter no longer uses physical books at school (all her books are in digital format and can be found on her iPad instead)
- It’s no longer unusual to witness savvy silver surfers who are down with the kids and clued in to the power of mobile devices – For example, I witnessed a surprisingly animated and well informed discussion among a mostly septuagenarian/octogenarian group of relatives at a recent wedding on the relative virtues of apps available on iPhones versus android phones. And, FYI, the conclusion was iPhone is just about keeping the edge.
Whatever way you put it, and like it or not, mobile technology is altering how we interact with the world around us at work, play, and even rest.
And the upshot is this: If you need to communicate with others for business reasons (within companies, with channels/partners, and/or with customers), you no longer have a choice…You have to think about where mobile fits into the picture!
As a speaker, for example, you need to think about:
- Impressions formed about you/your potential messages before you say a word – including actions you can take to prime interest in your topics
- How people will likely react to, and share thoughts about, what you say from the podium – during and after events, and
- What actions you can take to encourage the continuation/development of the conversations you start from the stage and before
So, great…One more thing to make your life more complicated, right?
