Nigh on every leader will tell you that achieving clarity is ‘mission critical’ when giving presentations to those they wish to influence.

Of course. After all, if you’re succinct, precise and unambiguous, you’ll make it easier for your audiences to get and remember your ideas.

Great. That sounds like a good plan and should be simple enough to achieve, right?

Of course, the answer should be yes.

Some Home Truths About Speakers and Clarity Problems

BUT, let me ask you two ‘hand on heart’ questions:

a) What proportion of speakers you’ve heard in the last few years left you thinking ‘what on earth was he/she talking about’ and/or “Holy moly, that was awfully long winded”?

b) What proportion of those offending speakers do you imagine sat down after giving their talks (maybe deluded because they received polite or even enthusiastic applause) thinking they did a good job sharing their message?

If you’re like most folks, you probably said ‘a high proportion’ on both counts.

Isn’t that weird?

And doesn’t it goes to show that George Bernard Shaw was right when he observed:” The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”?

So what goes wrong? And what can you do to achieve levels of clarity most speakers don’t?
